The causative factors for depression will mainly be a combination of personal attributes interacting with the cumulative effects of one or more stressful, difficult life events.
There are however key symptoms that should be present (more than feeling low) in order for a person to qualify for the diagnosis of depression. These include persistent lowering of mood, tearfulness, loss of interest and enjoyment, reduced energy and diminished activity with unexplained tiredness. Disturbance of sleep, reduction in appetite and weight loss (5% or more of body weight in the past month), pessimism about the future, poor concentration and self esteem with or without guilt and ideas of self harm can occur when depression becomes more serious. Such states are sometimes referred to as 'clinical depression'.
